Wall of Resistance Elaina Beam
Think for a moment about the walls that engulf our beings; both the physical walls that divide our space, and also the invisible walls we build within. Walls are barriers that keep us from engaging fully in the world and, symbolically, they represent resistance. They serve to separate us from one another, and over time, they can separate us from our own internal ability to grow in new directions.
We all have walls, and recently, I revisited a very familiar wall of resistance. In contemplation, I observed the wall, and with awareness, I began to understand its truest nature. Through the years, I had built it to provide me shelter from the things I did not want to accept about myself or certain circumstances-- and eventually, it grew to cast its shadows on my very way of thinking. My resistance had created a fortress to "protect" me, but in the process, it had also grown to inhibit the confidence and ease I feel when I'm acting within my natural state. By working to identify my resistance and detach from its source, I began to see the wall with greater transparency --- and, more importantly, I began to see the clarity and peace of mind that lay beyond it.
Sometimes, it's easy to hide in the shadows of a wall of resistance. After all, how would others recognize us in the light of our true beings? Would we recognize ourselves? Would our peers and family accept us? Would we be able to accept ourselves? Walls of resistance provide us a safe haven and allow us to defer the process of wrestling to understand, heal, release, and ultimately transform our shadows. Deep-seeded fears of judgment can often create an empire so large and seemingly impenetrable -- that it is difficult to admit, not only our fear of judgment by others, but also our own changing perceptions of self within it. In these moments, we must ask ourselves: Are we really so afraid of rejection and alternative possibilities that we are willing to compromise our beings, our spirits, and, indeed, our souls in order to protect a reality we've created, which no longer serves our true selves?
Perhaps the simplest way to overcome any wall of resistance is to gracefully embrace a willingness to flow freely into new ways of being. Acknowledge that you are only human, and in your humanness, you are radiant and divine. Allow yourself to shine! Allow the light to heal your shadows and watch as your self-imposed walls disappear as if they never existed.
When we stop doubting our ability to change and are willing to entertain the possibilities that always exist for transformation, we grant ourselves permission to thrive in our most natural and authentic states . With a willingness to explore what lurks within the shadows, we find the freedom to flourish in lightness. We realize the kingdom of doubt and darkness we've built around us, exists only in our own minds.
Daily Reflections Ask yourself. . . What walls have you built that lock you into a thinking pattern?
Are you willing to look beyond the walls of fear that may surround you?
Are you willing to compromise the person you think you are, for the person you really are?
